assement could you tell me if im on the right lines

INTRODUCTION

This report will be reporting on under-twelve’s and if they should really being using the internet. Some of the aspect I will be exploring is supervision of them on it, how many are actually on it. How many of them have a “facebook”, “twitter” and such things. What happened if they illegally download something? Do they realise the dangers of giving out personal information. Is any of our information that even us adults put on the internet safe?

I will also be looking at the good aspects of it as well getting kids computer friendly from a young age. The benefits of been able to operate around the internet correctly.

“Mark Sweney” from the guardian published a column about how a quarter of the UK internet users aged 8-12 us social networking sites.  Such as Facebook, MySpace and Bebo even thought the minimum age set by these sites is 13. Ofcom says that nearly half (48%) children aged between 8-11 have a computer at home. There results also that 40% of these children use the internet with no supervision at all. And 6% of them use it in there bedrooms alone. Almost all parents of 8-11s who use the internet (95%) say they have rules relating to content; a lot of the parents who let the children use the internet alone are less likely to have rules on what they can and can’t do on the internet.

A (self reported) average of 8-11s use the internet uses the internet for 4.4hours per week. The amount of under-twleves that use the internet is frightening do they really understand how much of there personal information they put into these social networking sights, which could potential have a paedophile on it. On the other side of the screen you don’t actually know the person it could be anyone, not necessarily a good person. Not everyone is what they seem.

Because sites like Facebook an twitter have age regulations most of the children liar about there age on and I don’t see how or why they will not understand that as easy as it was for them to lie someone else could lie as well.  Ofcom media literacy audit for 2009 revealed that 37 per cent of 5-7 year olds have visited Facebook says Liz Thomas from the daily mail.

Not just social networking site are unsafe for children, some people believe that Google isn’t to not suitable for under twelve’s and this is coming from a web censor “kit Eaton”.

UK ISP Tibboh has partnered up with ISP to age rate the internet to make it safer. This is possible Tibboh servers have apparently rated up to 3 billion web pages so far the where rated according to the BBFC’S classification. This is mostly an automatic process using services like Netsweeper this gives family’s a way to limit the services there children can access, but the do charge you for this service.

Tibboh servers have rated Google search engines as a “12” which some people believe it is pretty strict, yes u can type in any word and get a result but for you to get the result u must have some knowledge of the subject. Some believe over protective parents will approve and use these software’s for restrictions. This could be seen as one of the paths the internet could go and some will like this but can the BBFC’s rules really be used of the internet or should there be another classification for the internet.

In this time stopping children from using search engines are we living in a communist country like china that don’t want people to make there own decisions. Some of the less strict parents tell there children that the internet isn’t safe and believe that they understand.  But there are still children so I would personally keep an eye on my child. I wouldn’t allow my child to use the internet there would be rules and regulations.

A parent has to have some sort or system I believe, but how the child uses the internet vary. If a child hasn’t got any rules on the internet then they mostly like haven’t got any within there house hold.

On the other hand a lot of children under-twelve's use the internet for playing games; schools set work to be done online computers an internets have become a part of the world and to restrict them from using search engines restricts them from using an gaining experience. Computers are the way forward I can see why people think we should give them as much as time to familiarise there self’s with there systems. There our surveys to find out how much under-twelve’s actually understand about the internet. This study will shine a light on the situation; different children are of different mental ages. A child’s up bringing will have affects on what they use the internet for and what information they place on it.

The internet is used as a free way to communicate and for self expression, should your age stop you from being able to express your self. I don’t think so that’s right I don’t believe because your young you shouldn’t be able to express your self. Some twelve year olds can b extremely mature for there age. The BBC have reported that lessons in using the internet safely are set to become a compulsory part of the curriculum in primary school children in England from 2011.

What happened if under-twelve illegally downloads some thing of the internet?

Some people believe because there parents should be observing the child on the internet the parent is liable for there actions. Some times the parent isn’t there an can your really say that your parents know exactly what you where up to at that age. I know mine wasn’t watching me like a hawk, it all about how the child’s bought up, I was born and raised in south London an went catholic school the way I was raised will be different from someone  who went private school who was raised in Kent an that is a fact. Is what is legal clearly marked, is sharing files illegal. If it’s not that easy for me to tell how you can expect a twelve year old to that’s unfair.

A twelve year old was sued for downloading music; a twelve year old girl from New York City was among a hundred other people sued by a giant music company in federal courts around the country. The young lady believed that her mum paid a service fee for it. She had one major question to ask the record company “out of all people, why did they pick me?” the record company couldn’t answer that question. An RIAA spokeswoman called Amy Weiss said that they are taking it on a case by case basis. The family thought the were following the law because the signed up to “KAZAA” search music swapping three months before and paid $29.99 service charge. This twelve year old was one of 261 people sued for copying music, the young lady and others could face penalties up to $150,000 per song.

It seems a bit extreme, but there needs to be clear rules established because these record labels an artist are losing out on how many billion a year. Some would say they should go after the websites which actually allow theses things to happen because how is any child going to be able to identify clearly what music they can and can’t download. A lot of parents as well don’t have a clear understand of if they can download music, so there parent could even be supervising them not knowing that they are breaking any laws.

People say this is the computer generation everyone learning how to use them so, by saying that children should become comfortable with a computer from a young age. The government even had a scheme where they were giving out laptops and broadband access to 270,000 low income families is was to be rolled out across the UK. That’s how important they think having access to a computer is they are investing 300million to help theses poor families to afford IT.

To be honest if there are sites blocked there are still ways around them but for an under twelve year old to just pick it up by them self is hard to image.

Is any of our information that even us adults put on the internet safe?

You may not realize this but even some adults put them self’s in financial and physical danger. If you don’t us adequate security and watch what personal information you place on the internet or even your computer you could have your identity stolen. Even if you use it very safely your friends or family could have information that puts yours in danger. One thing to mention is that all risks involving computers are based on using the internet, sending and receiving emails or using memory devices in multiple computers. Some of these facts where found on a security manual produced by critical path project.

The internet has many scam artists on it trying to scam you at any give time. Not all but many pop-up ads are scams they will often try and get you to download something to your computer. That’s why u should only download information from trusted sources. Some sites also attach cookies onto your computer to help you remember the information you provided them.  Sites such as Facebook, twitter, Amazon store this information. This information can be used by these websites to give information and send targeted advertisement ads to you. Other sites will actually send your information out to other companies which u may not wish them to do. The best way to keep this to a small amount is to regularly delete them.

A lot of people nowadays do online shopping but do you really know who or where your information is going. A lot of criminals make online companies selling every type of product. Before you deal with any company you should checking to see if they provide a contact number and address. A which your providing private information should have a little padlock on the bottom of the screen a lot of adults don’t actually no this. If the site doesn’t have this and requesting personal information does not release the information the site isn’t encrypted and the owner can probably see everything you write.

Computer viruses can damage your computer and can send themselves to other people email address from your own without you even knowing. To avoid these things happening to your computer you should have anti-viruses, spy ware remover’s and firewalls.

VARK

VARK

I have completed a vark questionnaire, vark has these questionnaires to find out which is the best way for different people to learn. My total amount for visual was a 7, visual learning is learning through flowcharts, pictures, poster, slide show etc. Text books with diagram and different colour text are also visual teaching techniques help visual learners to process the information. As I have scored a 7 which is quiet high I can process a lot through these techniques. Being a visual learning knowing this information means that when I’m in a lecture I should use diagrams and replace words with initials and symbols. I will have the information I need for my exams. But I will need to practice turning my drawings back into words, recalling the image I’ve done me practicing this will help me to do well in my exam.

I also got a 7 in aural; aural is learning through conversations and discussions, the best way for an aural person to learn is through discussions. So as I am also an aural person I should attend lessons, tutorials an all discussions. In lectures using a recorder would help my education and leaving space in my notes for later recall and filling in. I should also reduce my notes so it’s easier to learn, my notes could be quiet poor so I will have to gather them from text books and other people. I should re-read my notes out loud and summaries them to allow them to sink in properly. The will all help me revise for the exam, when I am in the exam I should imagine I was talking to the examiner when doing it. I should also speak my ideas in my head and find a quiet place to recall my ideas.

I am like 60% of the population who have multiple learning styles these are the best ways for me to learning so a good combination of these two styles would be the best study techniques for me.
